Your GHIC isn’t travel insurance
The UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) is free and gives you state healthcare abroad on the same terms as locals, but the NHS says it “is not a replacement for travel insurance”. It doesn’t cover private treatment, a medical flight home, mountain rescue, cancellations or lost belongings.

What the GHIC does
The UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) is free and lasts up to five years. It gives you state healthcare that can’t wait until you get home, such as emergency treatment, on the same terms as local residents. That isn’t always free: you pay whatever locals pay.
It’s valid in EEA countries, Switzerland for some people, Australia, Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, and St Helena, Tristan da Cunha and Ascension.
| GHIC | Travel insurance | |
|---|---|---|
| State healthcare that can’t wait until you’re home | Yes, at the same cost as for locals | Usually |
| Private medical treatment | No | Usually |
| Flight home for medical reasons | No | Usually |
| Mountain or ski rescue | No | With winter sports cover |
| Cancelled trips, lost luggage, delays | No | Usually |
| Cost | Free | Paid |
Why you still need travel insurance
The NHS says the GHIC “is not a replacement for travel insurance”. It doesn’t pay for private treatment, a medical flight home, mountain rescue or the share of costs locals pay, and it doesn’t cover cancellations or belongings.
When to buy travel insurance
Many people buy it as soon as they book, so cancellation cover starts straight away. Check the policy covers any medical conditions you have and the activities you plan.
Apply for a GHIC only through the official NHS website: it’s free there.
